MP assassinated in Kandahar

An Afghan parliament member has been shot dead by two gunmen near his residence in the volatile Zhari district of Kandahar province. Habibullah Sanzenai, also known as Habibullah Jan, was killed on Friday night just hours after he visited an Afghan Army complex in Zhari. Like many other members of Parliament, Habibullah was a military commander before becoming a politician.

The provincial police chief for Kandahar province and two other high ranking security aides were fired by the Interior Ministry less than two weeks after a brazen Taliban attack on Kandahar’s main prison freed more than an estimated 1,100 inmates. Of those escaped, 400 are believed to be hardcore Taliban fighters, many of whom fled to safe havens throughout the province. A joint Coalition and Afghan security offensive aimed at recapturing the inmates has left nearly 50 Taliban fighters dead in various clashes in Kandahar and neighboring Zabul province.
